As you can see, I have been to several of these places, but as the years go by, the exact dates, and in some instances even the year that I was there, have become lost to my recollection. All of these dates were recorded on some now long-lost computer or disk. I went to Arrowhead after the 2 New York City sites (which I remember visiting on separate occasions in successive years) but before my children were born, which would put the excursion somewhere in the 1999-2001 period, but I cannot remember which year it was.

In my old literary tourism guides from the 1970s and 80s the Cameron House, which was home to the Smollett family for many generations, was apparently open for regular tours and contained a small museum dedicated to the writer in one of its rooms. It looks as if now it has been transformed into a five star luxury resort, however.

For whatever reason there is a real dearth of biographical information available about Hutchinson compared to just about every other author on this list. I can find nothing with regard to a gravesite or scattering of ashes, whether he attended a university or not, or any more precise birth location than "British India".

I am aware that there is no hard historical evidence that any particular poet named "Homer" ever lived, or that either of these places has a definite connection with anyone with a claim to be the author of the Homeric poems. I am not a scholar, however, and in the absence of any positive evidence of anything, I happily revert back to these traditional memes, which have their origins in antiquity itself. While numerous cities and islands have also staked claims to being the birthplace of the legendary poet, the Smyrna (Izmir) claim is the one I have seen the most and in the most affable sources, so it is the city I have settled on to honor the poet pending further evidence.

There is a surprising paucity of biographical information about Ed Streeter on the web, to the extent that it is not immediately evident to the lazy researcher whether he was born in Buffalo or New York City. As a social note, Ed Streeter's great grand-daughter recently graced the New York Times Wedding Pages, her picture being attractive enough to me to pique my interest in her story before I realized her literary lineage. She is keeping up the Ivy League tradition in the family (Dartmouth; Edward Streeter was Harvard Class of 1914). I noted as well that she was in medical school, which I took to be also in keeping with the family tradition, as I had had the notion that Ed Streeter had been a doctor as well; however I was mistaken, he was a banker (and the young Sarah Streeter's father appears to have been in the financial line as well. I liked that all of the wedding guests received a copy of great-grandfather's famous (but not overly familiar) book.
